focused character analysis: ciel phantomhive (ours)

before getting into this, i highly recommend reading my last post which received a great response from @plague-of-insomnia (very much appreciated additions that i will be referring to), i wanted to do a part two to my analysis and i will likely do a post of sebastian too but for now it's ciel who i want to focus on and how he is 'different' to other humans.

firstly i would like to follow up the points i made about the blue memory arc

our ciel wants to open a toy shop because of his own condition of being stuck at home with limited activities, he wants to make indoor toys. his brother says "nobles don't sell toys" and in this chapter it is alluded multiple times that he, as the second son, should have either become a 'vicar' or 'doctor' as they are respectable jobs, unlike being a toy maker/seller. another point is that o!ciel establishes here that he knows he can't be like the other members of the phantomhive bloodline (see: pt1 talking about undertaker's quote "he is unlike his predecessors"). back to the second son point, we already know how frustrating it is to be a second son:

but o!ciel has not once shown himself to be jealous of his brother, nor was he frustrated that he couldn't be earl. in fact he constantly reassures his brother in the blue memory arc that he is like their father and he'll make a great earl. he also makes it clear he does not desire the popularity that comes with being a vicar. (we see the vicar in their land is a manager of affairs with a lot of power/responsibility/direct access to nobility and when seb takes on the vicar disguise, ciel makes it clear that he is a "popular" person, akin to a "celebrity"). roles of religious importance are shown as vain in kuro.

it's interesting because the chapter we see the real vicar rathbone is the same chapter o!ciel says he wants to make toys and r!ciel says nobles don't do that and the murder arc where sebs is disguised as an alternate vicar rathbone is the same arc we find that o!ciel reads working class magazines because the consumers of his toys/funtom products are "common folk", he even reads punch!

..that's it for vicars, those are the only two instances we see them mentioned. the doctors we see are different. we have madame red who became a killer and used her skills to kill prostitutes out of spite (edit: as well as viscount druitt who does have a medical licence and we saw him doing human trafficking although i forgot about him, thank god plague-of-insomnia reminded me lmao) but we have two other doctors characters that are very important.

this nasty piece of work ^^ in the circus arc, very selfish and inhuman, uses VERY unethical methods to create prosthetics, morally bankrupt doctor similar to madame red

this stoker guy who is also a doctor. selfish, doesn't understand what medicine he's even using on people, just generally a egotistical awful guy.

in both these arcs, we see o!ciel show humanity

he's going to the workhouse baron kelvin supported and is going to recommend it to a philanthropist. although there was no workhouse, those children were likely already the doctor's victims.

in the campania, he not only goes back for lizzy, he is very considerate of a servant who not only tried to kill him with his snakes but also doesn't even call him by a formal title (snake called him 'smile' until the end, ciel never took offence to it despite being a noble)

he not only shows this amount of consideration, he also gives up his seat in the boats which plague-of-insomnia mentioned when they rb-ed pt1 of this analysis. i genuinely think the way o!ciel treats snake is extremely perplexing, he is too considerate... perhaps guilt? perhaps the empathy he feels as he too lived a lonely and alienated life as compared to the rest of his family? he felt like his family did not tell him anything and just died/disappeared, leaving him to have to wait for the killers to come back for him just so he can get his self-righteous revenge.

finally i would like to point out a little tidbit, o!ciel generally does not seem to care at all about society's expectations. his relationship with his tenants and servants is abnormally humane. i would also like to point out his confusion at elizabeth's sobbing about being the scary kind of woman he doesn't like (something r!ciel had implied)

this boy has never shown that kind of expression towards femininity or women... even when it sounds like he's being sexist, it's usually a poorly done translation, i don't know japanese well but before anyone pulls this up, i found the japanese raw to check over it myself:

he did not say "ladies don't come in such monstrous heights", he said something more along the lines of "it's impossible/i can't stand to dance with a tall/big lady in this way"(?)

the point of this analysis is not to say ciel is solely "good" or 'pure cinnamon roll uwu' (i would never), but just to say he is capable of humanity... in a story about horrible humans, he as a one of the morally grey main characters is capable of being a force for good. he's also pointed out to be different to others and shown to not contain the same bad aspects of the other pathways he could've gone in life e.g. vain vicar or diabolical doctor. he is at his core, a character who shows humanity and compassion and that is why he is likeable even when he does heinous things. he is more than an innocent baby and more than an evil aristocrat with zero morals. although the head honcho of this story is sebs but i will get into him in another post, he's also a VERY interesting protagonist.

Ooohh!! 👀✨ I love this question, very juicy hahaha 🤣💕 This would depend on which point of the story they are, but the trio will eventually love someone to some romantic extent (at least).

For Kurumi, that's a big YES, as she's quite the hopeless romantic! She loves shoujosei series(or just the romance genre in general) and dreams a lot of being in a relationship like the lead couples there. Add to that her cuteness aggression, it's quite inevitable that she gets crushes of varying degrees on quite a good amount of characters 😆🫶✨ (examples are Tsuna, Kyoko, Haru, Chrome & Enma - if you feel like there's a pattern then yes sjdfbhjsdv). Of course, a simple crush is different from really falling deep in love with someone, but it's a good start. Her only problem is that she can't commit and go through with it (like confessing, etc). I don't know if you know already, but if you see my previous ship arts with her, maybe you already know who she does fall in love with lol

For Kana, it's a vague/complicated type of love that can be romantic so I guess that's a "yes"??? Anyway, getting it to even develop slightly towards that direction is technically not impossible, the chance is non-zero, but it's gonna take...A LOT of time, patience, persistence, understanding & survival skills (and acceptance that u can't ever fix her lmao). She already has a ridiculous amount of issues caused by her love(/obsession?) on the platonic side of things ngl mxhdkbddmdn

For Yui, that's a HELL YEAH! Among the trio, he's the only one with dating experience but he really can't say he loved the people he dated romantically. It's more of trial and error run for him. Fortunately for him, he does eventually find someone he likes a lot! I don't think I mentioned this before unlike for the other twins, so I'll put it here lol The person he ends up falling for is Hiyori (Oniyanagi 10th Gen Sun Guardian).

Kurumi's bestest friends in the whole world are definitely Kana and Yui! 🥰💖✨ They've been through a lot and are very much ride-or-die. Yui is Kurumi's very first friend. They initially became friends out of obligation and loneliness, but after some rough events here and there, it became a genuine friendship. He's stuck with her/supported her during difficult times in their childhood and Kurumi will always appreciate him for that.

Then there's Kana to Kurumi. Where do I even begin? That's a whole rabbit hole right there. They're platonic soulmates, a set package. Do not separate OR ELSE. 👁️👄👁️

Oh, from the top of my head, that would be Hibari. I'll just make separate post if I can think of another canon character who can dethrone him in this lmao His respect for her is based on the respect that he would have for strong and worthy opponents. Kind of similar to Reborn? But more chase-able/bully-able (since she's a fellow student, their paths would cross more often).

It all started when Kana attacked and tried to kill him this one time to take over the school (they went ham at that time, Reborn just stopped them). This is what happens when you think murder is always the answer to your problems. You get some guy, with a passion of at least 180 hardcore soulslike game players, who wants to keep on retrying that boss fight @ you.

Yui: "Did your OC bear witness to anyone’s full character arc?"

Yui doesn't really like being in the spotlight. He's not even that fond of having the right-hand man role designated to him and the "formal" responsibilities that come with it (this is why Gokudera criticizes him often). But one of the main reasons he still stuck to this role is so that he can get to watch over the twins in his own way.

He did bear witness to a good amount of Kana's character arc, but since we're talking from start to finish of someone's character arc, then that would be for Kurumi's. No matter what happens, whether this bestfriend of his grows into a fine person or falls into ruins, he will be there to witness it all 🙂

This has been on my mind (obviously with everything that's been happening) and I'm curious if I'm alone in it. Do you sometimes think maybe they missed the window with buddie? That it should have happened in season 4 and maybe now they're trying to tell us it's too late? They keep digging the hole deeper for eddie, with shannon being the "the love of his life" he'll never get over and I just wonder if it'll ever make sense again in a way that's not a "consolation" because that would be unfair

so here's the thing.

I am so SO happy that they didn't do buddie in season 4. a rushed season affected by covid with literally one episode lead-up? if we lean into the idea that the shooting/will arc was supposed to be that, that is.

(but mind you that has never been said or confirmed, they floated a bi Buck storyline that got shut down, at which stage we don't even know, could possibly have been before even having a script written for it and way before they even came up with the shooting arc itself.)

but if we lean into that then I would've found it lackluster, personally. I know not everyone holds the same opinions and that's totally fine.

but having two characters who have previously only ever dated and talked about women* suddenly kiss and start dating, without coming out, self-realisation, any other preamble aside from "you almost died/I almost died" which isn't exactly a new predicament for either of these characters...

(*in Buck's case the bi crumbs were huge and I always felt that it could've been a pretty natural progression if they just let us know that actually, Buck was out this whole time it just didn't come up on screen lmao but in all seriousness from a general audience standpoint? having both of them suddenly be together? even though, we had a lot of subtext, I just doubt it would've worked as well as it could work now.)

I mean sure, it might've been just the start and then they could've done a bit more background work for it in season 5, but even if Fox didn't shut it down (again, just a simple bi Buck storyline, not even two main characters on the show suddenly being in a queer relationship or leading up to it at the very least) the risk of not getting renewed for season 5 would've been higher than ever, so for them to leave it hanging at the end of the season would've been unlikely imo.

just to reiterate before moving on: all of the above is based on speculation and what ifs.

and about buddie in this current climate, well... I talked about this extensively so just to keep it short; though I'm more than content if not, I still believe that buddie will become canon eventually.

and ngl I find it kinda frustrating how little faith some of you have in the writing of the show when this season proved more than anything that they are finally back on focusing on the characters and actually have ideas about where to take them instead of having every single one of them running around in circles.

sure, some of the storylines are more than bonkers, but this is 911 and that trend started in season 1, so if you don't like that, then maybe this isn't the show for you. because this season with all the insanity and heartbreak was and is so far, quintessential 911.

both Buck and Eddie are well established, complex characters and they deserve to be taken on a narrative journey separately and together if buddie should happen. yeah, clearly neither character is in a place right now, but what's the rush?

we have at least one more full season ahead of us, that could be more than enough time to take them there.

and I know that anytime I say this there are at least ten people in the notes saying that we had 6 years of lead-up, so it wouldn't be rushed, but I can't help but disagree.

Eddie still has no idea how to be in a relationship and actually be in it. yeah, sure, he and Buck have been playing house for years, but the fact that neither of them seem to recognise that is a big issue on its own. and Buck, for the first time since Abby, is in a good place romantically. like the ship or not, it's canon that he's more content and happy than ever and everyone around him thinks so too.

now, we don't know how long this relationship will last and if/when it'll end and why. but if Buck got the chance to discover this part of himself without trauma and significant pain, with the people around him being supportive and patient, then I don't want Eddie thrown in there with a halfhearted realisation-to-kiss-or-confession within one episode either.

I have trust that if buddie is about to happen, it'll be handled well and in no way, shape or form would it be a consolation prize — especially because Tim is no longer bending over for the bullying of the fans and just goes by his own rules and only gives as much as he wants to. as he should.

honestly, this whole "gimme and gimme now" attitude is so stupid. and frankly, the notion that a popular queer ship would actually have a real chance to go canon has just relatively recently became a thing and now so many people almost feel entitled to it, which then spoils their experience with what's actually going on as a whole.

if your enjoyment of the show is solely dependent on a ship becoming canon? then maybe watch something else, because you're just setting yourself up for heartache, one way or another.

It was like walking on a wire.

Balance was vital in keeping things from worsening because it almost seemed there was no way to improve them. The evidence was in her eyes, her drive, and how she moved about like she were nothing but a cog in a machine. Percy wondered, at times, where she was going. She hadn’t been lost, no, not yet, but it was obvious that they were losing her.

Shame was a thing. It existed, and he found it quite often, especially looking back on the things he’d done and the way he had treated those he loved over it all. He had been a cruel man, all for the taste of his anger and revenge, and even with the demon gone, he found it something that now easily nested in his heart and fractured soul. He fought it constantly, battle after battle, and hated it so much—dragging it to the point that he often hated himself over it—more than he would ever admit.

That led to too many talks, too many sit-downs, and being watched, and while Percy was a foolish man who happily hurt himself and didn’t believe he deserved the life and love that was given to him, he couldn’t throw it away now. Did he hurt those around him? Yes, that point was obvious, but he tried. Gods above and below, did he try, all for the sake of them.

He still does because he knows the pain it would put on them if he were just to stop and just give up, no matter how much he wants to. He cannot let that happen to them, and certainly not with all they’ve put up with from him already. As much as he already felt it was wasted, there was too much work and effort put into him just to throw it all away like it was worth nothing.

They would keep working, and he would keep trying.

When he had something to work with, he became happier and less focused on his spiraling thoughts of isolation and pain, including others. Everyone always told him that he needed to slow down and take a break, and while maybe his body could, his mind was the opposite. He didn’t know how to shut it off, to empty it of those thoughts specifically, so for him, this was his break. It’s how he found himself focusing on her more than he already did.

There was never a moment, of course, where his mind did not wander back to her, no matter what horrors haunted him, and even in those moments, she was still found there, just in the worst of ways he never wanted to imagine. For all he could lie through his teeth and mask his suffering with squared shoulders, Percy would never lie about that. She deserved to know how much she was loved and treasured and how he turned to her like a plant greedy for the sun. He tried to bloom, as large and vibrant as he could, craving the attention she gave him amongst the field of many, wanting to ensure that he would continue to be seen.

So that one day, his fears would not come true, and he would not find himself so empty and alone without her.

Where was his sun going?

She was right here with him, beside him, but changing, darkening, and somewhere in her endless skies, the clouds were rolling in with a ferocious thunderstorm. Lightning cracked, splitting, and illuminating; in that light, he could see the lines in her face forming into a permanent fixture. He longed to reach up and smooth them away with a gentle touch. Percy knew, however, that healing was more than that, but it also wasn’t this route she had set herself to walk upon. There was a darkness in her eyes, clouding the fear that rested in the slight trembles of the hands and the thunder that carried in her voice to match the lion she acted as she roared.

It peeked out occasionally, those golden rays brightening a room when she was around those she loved, and the world seemed at peace once again, but they all knew well enough was dwelled below in that heart. He knew more than well enough.

Sometimes, he can’t meet her eyes, bring himself to face a mirror of what he had become—what he fears he may still be capable of becoming, and he hates that even more. Blaming himself, in some way, was the easiest step to take. If she had never seen, through him, what was possible, these would not be actions she would be taking.

If he would never have … If he would never have …

Well, that list could go on, couldn’t it? He could spend far too long droning on about the mistakes he had made, what he shouldn’t have done, and those were all things in the past—actions he could never re-step and creations he could never erase. He had to live and die with all of them, and watching her do the same to herself was something he had never imagined. In the end, would she be happy with her decisions? Could she live with them? Would it fill that hole in her chest and soul?

Would it only leave her empty and cold in those parts of the mind, still wondering and crying about why things ended up the way they did, driving her to this point, left with no closure and some of her humanity missing? She would still be bleeding and the wound unable to be found, and the past could not be erased.

No matter how much there is, blood cannot fill a hole with no bottom.

He can reason, at some points, that she should have been able to realize all of that with his experiences. She watched them, witnessed them firsthand, and saw the man it all left behind. If even a man remained in the gunpowder and smoke he trailed. She still existed, but for how long?

The talks the two of them had, do have, and he only finds himself more and more in the quick tongue, rising temper at the mention of the subject, the regret in her eyes as words spill that she doesn’t mean. He wasn’t so much of a fool to miss that she could tell what this was doing to him, and that was why she began trying to push him away, distance herself, and how that only hurt her more. Percy wondered, for her, which hurt more: the poison on the tongue that ate away at her or the isolation that rotted her soul?

Maybe she had an answer for that because, for as much as he tried, he just couldn’t decide.

The guilt tried to argue, as it did many times before, that if he just left, kept his nose out of it, she wouldn’t have that pain he gave her. It would be one less worry on her mind, one less burden on her shoulders, but he knows how much she's hurting beyond that. Love, compassion, and understanding were necessary, and she needed people. As much as she claimed she needed no one and could do this all alone, deep down, she was begging them to stay, to help and save her.

Was he projecting too much?

Perhaps that’s why he was scared when he saw her standing there, tall and determined, prepared to make a decision that would change her life forever. The boy who had lost everything, including himself, was standing there instead, and what could he do? Short of knocking her unconscious and pulling her away, which he had more than half a mind to do, he was taken aback by the pressure and thoughts; she could hate him for saving her, but for long would she be safe? Could she accept it completely this time, or would she try again, alone with no one at her side, and who knows then what would happen to her?

None of it healed the grief left behind, masked by the explosive emotions, only leaving it bare, exposed, and as strong as all hells. Where that grief might take her, along with the shame of her actions to those around her, the profound inability to want to live with it, he didn’t want her to go. At least not alone.

Please, take him too. Don’t leave him, not like this.

So, when time ticked away, the hesitation was present, and her shoulders began to curl in on themselves as they shook; looking at the person before her, he had to hide the way he physically felt himself start to soften. She couldn’t do it, and his breathing hitched the slightest, the weapon in her hand lowering inch by painful inch until it was hanging by a thread at her side. She held the tears that threatened to spill from her eyes, and while things would be taken over for her, all he could focus on was gently taking that arm and leading her away.

“Come on, love, let’s go home,” he spoke in a hushed tone that only the two of them would hear, leaning close as she began to cry silently, stilly, with her back turned, barricaded safely by the others, “Don’t regret this path you chose.”

1) Why do you like or dislike this character?

I spent like seventy years attempting to find the post with this meme on it so I could give credit lmao, but I could not for the life of me, so uh, just know that I'm remaking this thing from memory I guess???

Jason is the bee in my bonnet, the rock in my shoe, and I am chewing on him forever and ever - meanwhile I will enjoy pretty much any comic about Steph simply because I love watching her do her thing :3

But to go into more detail I really enjoy Steph's narration style and the way she navigates the world. She feels very refreshingly street level and hopeful. Also as someone who grew up as the only "girl" (trans man but egg) in my martial arts class which was taught by a detective with a very drill sargent/tough-love approach to teaching and got an extra helping of PTSD as a result... watching her struggle, get dismissed bc of her gender, and go on to become a great hero despite Batman and his bullshit feels really fucking good. Def love Batgirl 2009

Jason on the other hand is just so deliciously messy. He's hurt a lot of people, but at the same time his anger is super justified! He's intimately familiar with violence in a way that I think makes him unable to conceptualize trust and gauge what an 'appropriate' response is. There's been several times where he's expressed the idea that serious violence by him against others is just normal and forgivable and not a big deal. There's something so compelling to me about that bc I think he really does see it that way, and it comes from a place of him being extremely used to receiving violence and being expected to forgive and not hold it against them. That wall of text in the meme picture is a tiny fraction of one of my essays on him. He's got so many fascinating layers and I love peeling him apart and putting him back together like a robot performing surgery on a grape.

Sometime after I finish Chained, I really want to write Four and Twenty Blackbirds, which is a fic concept I've had for ages now that puts them together in a lesbian/gay man queer relationship. The premise is that somehow or other Steph comes back to Gotham secretly/early and Jason is the first one to find her and they end up building a weird organized crime/community support organization called The Blackbirds.

Not sure on the timeline. Maybe it'll start before Under the Red Hood? Maybe after a modified Hush plotline?? In any case: Jason offers to preform High Vengeance against Black Mask either for or with her. She does not want him killed! She would feel like that went completely against everything she died for. However, she does want that fucker taken down, and is touched that Jason clearly genuinely cares. Also I'm going to have Jason assume without question that she is fully competent and his equal. Unlike every other vigilante in town, she will never have to prove herself to him. So anyways she tells him that yeah, she wants her revenge, but it's gonna happen her way, and the plot moves on from there, as together they destroy and co-opt Black Mask's organization and establish a territory for themselves :3

22) If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?

Unless given a reading suggestion by someone else, I exclusively read JayTim fanfiction, which heavily skews what I look for and see in fic. I'm also pretty damned picky lol I write much more fic than I read these days

Even the most basic, stripped down version of Stephanie's core concepts and background ought to be enough to conclude that she would have very complex feelings about both Jason and Tim and them dating each other. She had a supervillain father and a character arc about learning to value the lives of even her worst enemies. Now her ex is dating a guy who had a henchman father and the same character arc in reverse, a guy who specifically targeted her killer in order to get back at the mentor who bears some responsibility for both her death and his own. They are so uniquely poised to understand each other from across this fascinating chasm, both in terms of approaches to vigilantism and dating Tim. You could not ask for a more fertile storytelling ground, regardless of if you want her to be supportive or not.

So yeah, for Stephanie I like it when she has a personality outside of cheerleading Tim while being vaguely sweet and quirky.

The bar is in Hell here folks, and out of the hundreds of fanfics I've read I've only ever seen it cleared twice. And that's only if we include my own goddamned writing. This goes beyond normal fandom simplification, especially when you factor in that Cass, famously against all killing Cass, gets similarly denuded of all internal motives and qualities in favor of being (sometimes literally) wordlessly supportive for no apparent reason, while in those same fics the male characters get to have opinions and internal viewpoints. JayTim nation, I am praying for us to learn how to write women, truly.

Now on to Jason!

I think of Jason as someone who is intense in every facet of himself. He can be cruel and mistrustful or tender and romantic, but no matter what he is I want him to be a little unhinged with it, a little too deep, a little too incapable of not giving a fuck. I want this man lost in the sauce, whatever that sauce may be.

I dislike him being overly apologetic, which practically translates to me disliking most fics in which he is apologetic at all lol I do think he would come to regret some of his actions, but I tend to think those would be different actions than the ones he's usually depicted apologizing for. For instance, I can absolutely see him apologizing to a victim of the Joker for not killing him when he got the chance, but I don't really think he'd have the framework to consider his fights with Tim to have been all that far out of line.

Ohhhhhhh boy that was fuckin ages ago??? I'm not honestly sure I remember, though I do know that I read JayTim fanfics before anything else that involved these characters, so it had to have been based on that.

Bodyguard!Din is one of my favorite things ever, seriously. I have only read the first chapter of this, but I'm so excited to read more. The way the whole first part of this fic is a flashback and you know eventually you get kidnapped???? It gives you this feeling of doom the whole time you're reading lmao (good thing, I promise) but like... our Mandalorian is gonna save us, yeah?

Be-All and Endor - a Din series by @djarins-cyare

Listen... this is the most well researched Din fic I have ever read. The amount of thought that went into this fic is insane. The linguistics are fascinating -- I think she absolutely nails the voice of everyone in this fic, especially Din. The knowledge of Mando'a and Ewokese on display here is incredible and if you ever wanted to hear Din Djarin growl strings of (actually coherent) Mando'a (with thorough translations) right into your ear... This fic is for you. The characterization and the way that every single decision made by Reader and Din make sense and build to such a gorgeous character arc? UGH. And while you have to wait... a long time... for smut -- it is so worth it. GODS this fic is gorgeous. I love it so fuckin much. (This is the one I was talking about in the intro)

the four chimes verse is essentially an amalgamation of my want—need—for badass max, max angst, elumax angst, just general party and co angst, apocalypse four shenanigans, several unexplored character interactions and dynamics, the four horsemen of the apocalypse concept, and everything else that comes with this plus things i wasnt able to mention its very self indulgent ngl

but yes, it's about the apocalypse four (max, patrick, fred, and chrissy) and how they get turned into the upside down four horsemen of the apocalypse aka the four chimes of catastrophe by vecna, and they become his way of furthering chaos and destruction in hawkins, while also using them to get rid of his thorns aka the party and co

im pretty sure i explained it a bit before but robin got hit by an arrow that was meant for nancy in the ciquest au, and because of nancy, she's able to find the will to fight back against the infection instead of succumbing to it, making it her own

One and the chimes sees how she's evolving and don't like it, so lence's suggestion of getting nancy takes priority, and so it happens

nance becomes quest and now the battle is on

robin is obviously devastated and the gang is slightly in shambles because of how much nancy brings to the table, and now she's gone—no, worse, she's being used for the other side

so robin steps up to the plate in multiple ways, trying her best to fill the void nancy was forced to leave behind

the burden on her is so heavy considering she got a power she technically never expected to have nor wanted, but now it's on her to make the most use of it

she usually questions why it was her who was in this situation and literally not anybody else who she thinks could definitely do better

lots of questions and wondering for her

now, unlike with renegade, she doesn't lose herself technically, but she gets close, like a lot

though should i mention that there was a little kidnapping that happened? the person who was kidnapped in question being someone who is very important to robin and may have caused a some strain and conflict for her and the chimes?

so the chimes. in our 68600 messages (as of the moment) of a four chimes dump, we've built up the characters and personalities of the chimes, and somewhere in this thread is the scattered information on them

now, i unfortunately dont have the time and patience to go through the thread to find all of the little information, but we'll do our best to give a good rundown of their characters

having no prior connection to the main gang—or thorns as they call the gang—besides eddie who is dead and a spectre here, so she's the one who has the least moments of "remembering their past life" before

most likely to actually defy One, and fun fact, he has an au called the runaway au where he, a chime in the middle of the battle between the upside down and right side up, got to run and escape from One before certain things happened, which then causes a chain reaction in this au ofc

One can summon them/call them whenever and its shown through the shivering cold in their necks, like what happens with will

One wants them to be just the way he wants them, meaning the way they died and got transformed into chimes must be how they are no matter what (this includes clothes, hair, weapons, and everything in general)

the only new addition he accepts them to have are new scars :')

the chimes have such a complicated relationship, but at the end of the day, post-vec, they love each other

note for them individually: there's a lot more that i want to add but my brain is blanking a little and i am probably forgetting some things, but here are some of the important things to note (remember this is incomplete to everything we wanna add ASFHUIASFh)

some relationship notes (by pairs, groups are another story)

min clashes with death when it comes to lence, but otherwise are fine with each other, neutral in general but are connected as the first two chimes of One

min and war are not quite friends, more distant than friends but closer than allies… (very interesting when you note how they were in their Before)

has a very one-sided antagonistic rivalry with lence, especially when it comes to the leadership position (this changes a bit when quest is in play as she's the leader, but there's still the rivalry with lence despite not being leader in ciquest/conquest), will be very callous in a way with her, but they actually work well together, especially as the similar twin concepts of famine and pestilence

quest is able to take min's bitterness mostly in a stride and keeps her in check from being too antagonistic when it comes to leadership roles and just generally (helps because quest understands them in a way, though she doesnt understand why she does)

death and war are more or less chill with each other, most cordial relationship out of every single chime relationship and the least tension filled, just vibing so real (though war knows death is a coward and death knows that war knows it)

death and lence are surprisingly close, only second to quest for lence (and death too technically, which is inspired by their Before), this relationship is due to the fact that in canon, max got to see and technically interact with chrissy, patrick, and nancy, but never with fred, so we saw it and ran with it and now they're close here

death and quest are more or less okay with each other, and their Before helped them understand each other better, unlike the other chimes' Before affecting their relationships in another way

war and lence are complicated, since war throws lence under the bus the most (especially in og) to avoid One's ire, and lence understands why, because of her own Before (and it doesnt help that she takes bullets for the other chimes), but they're both fine more or less

war and quest are similar to min and lence with the similar concepts, war and conquest, fire and lava, war follows quest to the T (just like he does with lence in og but more so here with quest), and they work well together because of their similar concepts

lence and quest are the closest out of everyone, helped by their Before and their instincts with each other, confides with each other a lot and are just helping each other no matter what, tho ofc this comes with the consequence of One seeing this "weakness" of theirs and using this bond between them to punish them when he sees fit

although here's a note about this too: finn said "honestly tho their relationships r So complicated its hard to capture in a few sentences", and i agree, what you just read is just some general thoughts on their relationships, but god is there so much more to them all, and if we want to really show you the relationships in full, we would have to ramble it all out ASHUFIUASHF but yeah

Sometimes you mention that you've had an idea for a kiu sequel story, I haven't seen you talk about it in detail anywhere before unless I missed it? Please feel free to use this ask to ramble as much as you'd like about it!

i never really did talk about it in much detail!! i always wanted to actually do something with it, but it’s honestly very unlikely at this point since i’m no writer lmao, so i may as well just full plot summary at this point. it’s very self indulgent because it features my ocs AND focuses on my favorite guy :)

it was going to start with somewhat cliche ~imbalances of power~ popping up in a few spots, specifically five of them that each had a different effect and were badly messing with humans (palutena cares, viridi does not) and with animals and plantlife (palutena cares, viridi VERY MUCH cares) and so angels are sent off to investigate, as well as probably phosphora and some of viridi’s little creatures too. these five spots are eventually found to be connected to the five primal gods who created the universe and have been dormant since, with each of the magic voids tapping into something they represented - life, love, time, sky, and shadow.

of course, this upsets other forces too, leading to gods that weren’t involved in the war on hades trying to work out what was going on (aka my main ocs asterie, linus, raniris, and dia) and other such things that would probably make it so the first few chapters are relatively low stakes and just getting into the whole thing. raniris and dia are introduced around here as dia becomes part of Team Angel to figure out what’s going on.

the first major turning point would be when aurum invasion 2 happens, except it’s probably not really the aurum is just the same concept but more intelligent. they do whatever and in the process of pit and dark pit dismantling the place and being the main characters, the Not Aurum take loose shed feathers that they naturally dropped during combat (dia’s magic wings do not shed) and uses them to create an AI clone of them both that uses their combined DNA as a base, that being pit0.exe or just Zero. he has his moment and his character arc and he dies and everyone thinks the whole thing was just a momentary distraction that’s finally over.

but zero’s existence catches the attention of the primal goddess of life who is waking, as even as an ai he’s deemed to be his own living being with a soul and a heart. and he has connections to pit - sure, of course she knows of pit, she knows of every life that’s ever come and gone, even while she was dormant - but then she notices the other half of zero’s basis and realised that there’s a living, breathing life she’d never seen before, that being dark pit. the existence of the rogue ai has drawn Life’s attention to the mirror clone she never saw before.

that’s part of why i always did mention that the plot of this story boiled down to that one post that’s something like, ‘god just called me and said he didn’t make me and didn’t know what i was’

palutena and viridi notice the ancient power voids slowly growing and becoming more active, taking a bit to realise they’re targeting them; taking even longer to realise they’re not generally attacking them all back in self defense or anything, but are now targeting dark pit and eventually end up pulling him into one of the voids where no one can follow to get him out.

this of course becomes both an ecological disaster because the voids continue to grow and act out and affect the world around them, but it’s now also a rescue mission that feels really bleak. how in the hell, after all, do you rescue someone who was abducted by ancient gods older than the universe, from whom the current gods spawned and have no actual power over them, and yet are our only hopes?

for a while it’s a search mission and a self defense thing as they try to survive and find weak points in the primal gods’ voids. it depends on pit and dia as the main angels at the front, and eventually aui shows up too to help out, as urged by mynta who is not actively around at this point. asterie and linus would also be more formally introduced around this point too.

and okay so from there the concept is somewhat underdeveloped, but the idea was in part that dark pit’s previously-unnoticed-by-the-primordial-soup vessel becomes a sacrificial lamb for the five primal gods - literally becoming a shadow in ritual robes with sheep’s horns and tail, no voice, and barely even a face - and the trouble becomes ‘well we’ve found him, now how do we get him out of there and get the primal gods to back off of our world without killing him’. something something remake the rebelling world, something something please don’t do that and also can we have our edgy guy back too. just imagine an epic zelda final boss fight.

that is pretty much as much as i’ve got for my kiu sequel… and i would happily hand it and my ocs all over to sakurai to make it a reality if i could

Part One & Two

Fukuharu/ Yukichi Fukuzawa x Kirako Haruno: This is how I’m finding out Haruno is not her given name and it’s Kirako. Lol. Is she also underage like Naomi? I mean even if she’s above age she’s still young enough to be his daughter so ick. Also Fukuzawa always struck me as the “married to his job” type. -2/10

Fukuchi Protection Duo: Yukichi Fukuzawa x Teruko Okura: Whoever was shipping this has definitely stopped after the age reveal LMAO. -2/10 EDIT: I saw that there was a translation error that made it seem like she was 12 years old but actually she was 12 when Fukuchi found her, which we don’t know the exact date because it said after the War, and the timeline is a little messy. But I do assume she’s an adult now, even if we don’t know how many years ago she was 12. (Asagiri please bring back the character info sheets 🙏🏽)

Shippers be like “she was looking at Fukuzawa here”

Fyoagatha/ Fyodor Dostoyevsky x Agatha Christie: I had always heard that people shipped this, but I never saw any of it myself. But one day a few months ago I stumbled upon a post on here with a ton of fanart by different artists saved like a collage. So there’s definitely more shippers than what it seems. Unlike the Shibusawa x Agatha ship, this one makes a little more sense since The Order of the Clocktower was against what Shibusawa was doing and saw him as a threat, whereas Fyodor has things going on in different countries and has different sorts of “allies” and works with people to use them, it makes sense if he would try to get involved with the people in the Order, if only to use them. 2/10

Hawmitch/ Nathaniel Hawthorne x Margaret Mitchell: I don’t care about Hawthorne but I do want to see more of Margaret now that she’s healed and we still have more potential for a Guild subplot. Even though I don’t care much for the characters, this is the only ship so far where both (?) members have feelings for each other. (Even if there was a bit of a tsundere trope going on.) Who am I to stand in their way? I’ll give them a six just for that. 6/10

Of course it’s going to end tragically for them though, the romances in both the novels their abilities are named after don’t end happily.

Higuzai/ Ichiyo Higuchi x Osamu Dazai: Eh. But props to Higuchi for freaking Dazai out with that phrase “your blood is blacker than anyone in Yokohama’s. Port Mafia black” (paraphrasing), that definitely hit a soft spot that not many people can get at. And he didn’t do/say anything in retaliation! Interesting. 2/10

Slay (just a girlfailure trying to have a girlboss arc)

Kajisano/ Kaji Motojirou x Akiko Yosano: Ew. The lemon guy annoys the hell outta me. Yosano doesn’t like him either✋🏽 0/10

I’ve heard they have more pairings than the English speaking fandom. I don’t think these two would be bad as a couple. I’m interested in this dynamic. Maybe one day they’ll interact, I’d like to see more of Louisa. 3/10

Kunisaki/ Doppo Kunikida x Nobuko Sasaki: In all honesty, I don’t know how I feel about them as a ship. I know there’s theories he’s actually the Azure Messenger, which means they were a couple at one point. But I doubt it. However, I’ve only seen the butchered adaptation of this, I haven’t read the light novel. So my rating is subject to change. 3/10

Kunisano/ Doppo Kunikida x Akiko Yosano: I made my mom watch the anime with me last year and afterwards when I asked her about ships she said she wants them to be together. When I told her “no one ships this” she was shocked. Gave a whole mini rant about why they’d be good together. And tbh I can see it. But not too much. I do want them to interact more. Everything on AO3 about them was poly ships or a/b/o, so I can’t even turn to fanon for more details 😞 3.5/10

I kinda touched on my decisions for the recent arc of tbbw in my last update but I had more to say (i totally ran out of words in the last authors note, so had to delete like two paragraphs lmao), especially on chapter 35 and 34, so here it goes. [spoilers under the cut]

Firstly, I've mentioned this before but the whole arc of Damon disappearing was not originally planned in the first plot line. Initially, I'd discarded giving any justice for Caroline because I couldn't see a way of keeping her, Klaus and her friends all in character without utter carnage following in the fallout. If anything happened to Damon, Stefan and Elena would flip out and Stefan's whole vendetta against Klaus would be re-ignited. Similarly, Caroline, in this point in time, isn't one to exactly condone cold-blooded murder or torture. And there's also the very messy and difficult art of accurately presenting Caroline's trauma respectfully when I myself have never experienced anything like it. But then I think I was writing chapter 12? Chapter 13? And suddenly I had a HUGE epiphany.

I was rewatching the end of s3 tvd to help better draft out the scenes I was currently writing and plan future chapters in more detail, and I got to the scene in 3x21 where Stefan and Damon are driving out of Mystic Falls to dump Klaus' dessicated body somewhere. In canon... Damon literally promises to leave Mystic Falls if Elena chooses Stefan (he doesn't make good on his word later - no surprise there really) and seeing that, it hit me.

It fucking hit me.

What if the Mystic Falls gang never even realised Damon was missing? What if they never even suspected Klaus when it came to his disappearance? Stefan and Damon haven't always kept in touch over their decades as vampires, would Stefan really be surprised if Damon 'left' Mystic Falls and didn't text, didn't call? Damon wasn't suspicious in canon either, when Stefan spent a summer in a safe at the bottom of the falls while he got to be with Elena. I'm not saying Damon and Stefan don't care about each other - they obviously do, to a passionate extent, but unlike the Mikaelsons dynamic, they're a lot more independent of each other and haven't spent their entire vampiric lives together, tied to the hip. They're used to not seeing or hearing from one another for long periods of time. Hell, Damon even spent years? Decades? Imprisoned by the Augustine Society and Stefan never noticed, so like, it's technically canon the two aren't great at communicating their current whereabouts. So, if they never realise Damon is missing, never even suspect Klaus... Stefan's characterisation is sorted. I can do whatever I want to Damon and it doesn't matter because Stefan won't be out of character leaving Damon to the wolves, because he doesn't even know Damon has been thrown to the wolves in the first place. Elena's characterisation is similar to Stefan in some regard as she's in love with Damon at this point, but she does still care about Caroline and her anger at Damon and guilt complex over what happened to Care would probably outweigh the niggling feeling at the back of her mind that something is wrong for the most part. Bonnie's Bonnie - she'd be down for murdering Damon lmao, so like I don't even need to find a loophole for her.

Keeping Klaus and Liz in character were harder. In a perfect world, I'd have Caroline exacting her own revenge - like that would be the perfect plot line and perhaps would work if she was freshly turned, shunned from her friends and met Klaus then. Except she didn't meet him then, her friends are still her friends and any revenge against Damon now would be OOC. Which is where Liz comes in. We've already seen in canon she's capable of taking out vampires, or at least motivated to do so. Caroline is her daughter, and like the night of Caroline's birthday, she'd do anything to protect her - even make a deal with the devil. So she approaches Klaus, plots with him to take out Damon in a cunning, quiet way...and Klaus goes along with it because although he is impulsive and has a flair for the dramatics, he's cunning too. Manipulative. Tactical. Traits that are often forgotten in the later seasons and TO.

I don't ever show what happens to Damon, except for that 'Hello Damon' and the blood decorating Klaus' socks, and that's on purpose. I wanted it to be vague. Is Damon dead? Is he alive? Is he forever locked in the Mikaelsons' basement? Is he free, but compelled with a horrific list of instructions, never allowed to lay eyes on Caroline ever again? No one knows.

It's up to you to decide.

And if, maybe, he's still alive in a hundred years - well. I'm sure Caroline wouldn't mind then exacting her own revenge. Perhaps Klaus will hand Damon over to her gifted wrapped for her 118th birthday as an anniversary present, who knows.

175 published works! I do not count any WIPs, outlines, notes scratched longhand, or random shitposts I make on the tunglr because that's another 1700+ 😂😂😂

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

According to my stats page.... 1,218,398. So 1.2 million+ words published since maybe 2010. Everything prior to 2010 was deleted because I was super embarrassed of what I used to write 😭

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I follow my heart so my AO3 is basically my fixation chart in real-time. Way too many specific fandoms to count, but in terms of medium: I write for a lot of manga fandoms, used to write kpop fanfiction as a kid, still write kdrama fanfiction whenever something catches my eye, and of course comic books and wrestling. I also have a handful of fanfics for books.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

I love responding to comments!! It makes me feel special lmao 😂

Ephemeral (Hunter x Hunter manga). I basically wrote the ending for the Dark Continent arc (since it's unlikely it'll ever get finished), and sank the boat and all its passengers while making my OTP end up together in heaven after they both died 😂😂😂

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Leoht Unfæger (Beyond Evil kdrama). Basically wrote a novella repairing my ship's relationship that the kdrama had done serious damage to. They got married in the end even though one half went to jail for contributing to the other half's sister's demise. Oh, and the same guy who went to jail also used to bang the sister 😂😂😂

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

Regularly! I'm pretty vocal about my likes and dislikes, and many times, by behavior has invited demons into me house. During my Black Clover fandumbing days, a crackhead used to make it their mission to leave hateful comments on my fics. I don't delete them however. Most of the time it makes me laugh bc you can figure out the speech patterns and tag exactly who it is that wrote it. I like to think ten years down the line, they'll look back on their clownery and let the shame eat them alive.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes!

10. Do you write crossovers?

It depends! During my kpoppie days, I did a crossover of my favorite band and one of my favorite kdramas, and never finished it (even though I have the ending outlined on paper). It really depends on the fandoms and if I find synergy between them.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Probably lol, but not that I know of. I grew up during the asianfanfics days, and used to post fanfiction on other sites before I got an AO3 account. It was not uncommon to see fanfiction stolen from LJ and other sites that were then posted to asianfanfics, which had a notorious plagiarism issue.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I have three in circulation in the Russian language, and one that was translated into Chinese!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Nope, unless RPing during the third grade on Naruto forums counts as collaborating on fanfic 😂😂😂

14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

It changes every day bc I am dynamic and go with me heart. But also note, for some of my favorite ships, I've either never written fanfiction for, or it's no longer available cuz I done deleted it, so I'll just note my CURRENT haunts (which may or may not be decades old... sad 😂).

Building dread, purple prosing, and writing the saddest sadz before giving folks the happy ending. I'm also a slowburn maestro. Love horror, but usually end up writing more romance than plain horror LOL 👽

I be overthinking shit, or I be outlining something and saying I'm finna write it but then I don't because I end up getting distracted by something else. I have a Prison Playbook kdrama fic outline that's nineteen pages long that I will never write out bc I got distracted by ANOTHER kdrama. I have OCD but that shit apparently has no impact on my publication goals 😭

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Love it! I'm fluent in multiple languages, so I love peppering in different languages in my fanfics, and regularly borrow from Hindi and Arabic language songs, poems, and other media to title fics. Maybe 30% of my fanfiction is inspired by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan songs. It do be like that sometimes djhfgdfgdf

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I genuinely don't remember anymore, it has been SO long. All I DO know is that I deleted it all because I was an embarrassed baby and really wish I hadn't. It can be anything between the following fandoms: Yugioh, X-Men comics, Bleach, Smallville, some variant of old teen movies, etc. I seriously don't remember which one, but ONE of them. lol.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

All of them. I bleed words. I be rereading my own fanfiction like they're the hottest novels on the stands. I try to read other fanfiction when the mood strikes, but I myself am my target audience, so I be writing things that I know I'm gonna reread years down the line. For example, my HxH fanfics are still my favorite fanfics from the fandom cuz nobody else was writing Hisoka/true!form!Bisky, and few people were dedicated to Melody/Kurapika. I'm a narcissist 👽👽👽

lee and sasuke wasn't something i'd considered before but you described a truly great seed if i ever felt up to exploring that!!! thanks!!! personally i'm Big Fan of sai and shino but setting aside our favourite kikaichu-boy sai though......??? sai and lee just seems like a very very interesting combination based on a tenet of honesty, and because they could also bond over bodies like lee could with sasuke and lee's innate ability to connect to a certain outsider archetype- just look at gaara lol but also-- ...yeah i go hard with sai and lee being good friends and also more lmao

It's so funny that you mention Gaara, because I was so so tempted to add him to the list, but I really like Lee and Gaara as lifelong friends/allies who have this deep respect they don't share with anyone else, and I find it unlikely that Konoha would let it's new 8-gates master leave the village to mate someone else... Of the main group, I think Gaara and Lee are only ones to have had a spar (I'm not counting the shukaku vs kyuubi because that was a different thing) that ended in a particularly bad sort of way - with Lee almost permanently injured and in the hospital - only to fight beside each other a few months later. (Can you all tell sasuke retrieval arc was probably my favorite thing, the way each individual fight was crafted as a way for the boys to work out some major personal issues was so good, I miss the pacing of the og series)

But anon, anon, you have me absolutely vibrating. Shino is not on my list at the moment because I feel he would be difficult for me to write, but I can see it! Shino and Sai have that very quiet introvert + quiet extrovert thing going on. I'm not certain if they or Lee and Sai even speak in the show, so it didn't occur to me, but I agree these are some excellent pairings.

You're very right about Lee's ability to connect with those who are a little "outside" of the usual.

Lee and Sai have different approaches to honesty and different perspectives on honor but I absolutely pick up what you're putting down where they oddly seem to come to complementary conclusions about the way they want to interact with the people around them. Lee and Sai would also likely do without the sniping that Sasuke is known for. Sai imitates Sasuke's on occasion, but it's an act and Sai is not really that confrontational with the people around him, he's more likely to say something uncomfortable and true and let the chips fall. Alpha is going to be doing a lot of... not quite damage control but something between these two lol.

The only thing I would say is that yes, Sai's difficulties regarding connection with his "self" are similar to Sasuke's disconnect with his physical body, but Sasuke is deeply in touch with his emotions, while Sai as an artist is very aware of his physical self.

Sasuke's primary drive is the emotional connections he has with his immediate family, his friends, and his clan, his people. That might be part of the separation between his body and his desires - they have not always moved him towards the same goal, and his body has "failed" him more than once. Omegaverse Sasuke particularly feels this way because heats feel like a regularly scheduled reminder of weakness and until he experiences the emotional tether of a mate, he finds them deeply frustrating and gets rid of them with some grade-a genuine article Orochimaru drugs.

Sai is an artist, but he is specifically a painter. In more than one drama, painting is directly compared to a warrior's fighting style, which makes it very interesting that for Sai they are not only a comparison, but one and the same. For Sai, his paintings are one of the only ways he's able to connect his physical self to what he's feeling. I would even say that he's the most aware of his physical self when he is painting. At all other times though, I do think that you are right, that while Sai does sort of instinctually inhabit his physicality the way any very skilled physical performer does, that he doesn't connect his emotions to his body. Maybe a bit of inverse to the way Sasuke doesn't feel he can always connect his body to his emotions...

Since we're saying things today, the idea of Sasuke/Lee came to me because of the parallels between their respective mentors. Kakashi/Guy works very well as a ship, both logically and emotionally, but I like them as friends, simply because their bond is so particular. Kakashi has so few true friends though that in my writing, I preferentially preserve that profoundly cultivated relationship between them as an unshakeable friendship rather than a romantic entanglement. Thought it would be fun to play that out in their students instead ;)

So!! Vol 17 tl;dr thoughts: i liked it better half of it is maki and she is a pretty cool character, im just sad about how gege handled mai and nobara’s supposedly confirmed death. It could’ve been different. We should’ve had more of yaga before, also naoya sucks! Choso my beloved he is so cute about yuuji🥹 overall great volume!!
